Course Description

Technology for the Community is a long-term projects course that focuses on the development of computational products to serve the needs of local community service organizations.

Project ideas are generated in an annual community brainstorming workshop (the Innovation Workshop) that is facilitated by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (IWT). This course can be repeated for credit in subsequent semesters. Projects may extend over multiple semesters.

Objectives of the course:

  • To develop practical skill in the design, development and evaluation of useful and usable computer software.
  • To acquire a working knowledge of core user-centered design and analysis techniques.
  • To develop skills and expertise in multi-disciplinary teamwork, including working with clients.
  • To develop skills and expertise in project management, scoping, and scheduling.
